The marker is bringing people back to life, just as they believed, and the necromorphs are the next evolutionary step for humanity. Many Unitologists see the necromorphs as a sign that what they believe about the marker is real. This is because they believe they'll be reborn during convergence. It's said in the text logs, but explained more in Dead Space 2, but Unitologists, when they die they freeze their bodies instead of burying them. Unitologists believe that when everyone dies, they are reborn in an event called convergence. So when the red marker, the one in Dead Space 1, was found, Unitologists saw it as a sign/reward for years of faith. ![]() Unitologists believe EarthGov killed him for telling people the truth about the markers and hid the black marker somewhere. But essentially, their prophet, Michael Altman, discovered the black marker on Earth hundreds of years ago. Unitology as a religion really gets explained more in Dead Space 2. The promises of Unitology for the rank and file members are vague and the average believer knows nothing beyond a very sanitized version of the truth. Yet others like Terrence Kyne see the consequences of the Marker's power for what it is and abandon their faith. Others like Jacob Danik rationalize that the necromorphs are aberrations of the Marker's true purpose, created due to humanity's tampering with the Markers. Some like Challus Mercer accept the necromorphs at face value as divine beings. ![]() ![]() Since the founding of the Church of Unitology it is unclear in the original games whether the leaders of the church really understand what Convergence entails. They believed that if used properly, the Marker could bring about eternal life and ascend humanity to a new level of existence. In the book Dead Space: Martyr Markoff and Stevens, the two actual founders of Unitology, convince themselves not that the necromorphs are a end goal but that the Black Marker was somehow damaged or malfunctioning. ![]()
